An essay contest is currently underway to encourage international students studying in colleges and universities across China to share their stories about the country and its development.

Themed China in My Eyes--Development and Future, the contest aims to promote exchange between China and the rest of the world for common development, according to its sponsor and organizer, the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC). It is the third year that the university has organized the essay contest.

Located in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, and with a history of 67 years, the UESTC is known as the cradle for China's electronic industry. It has established partnerships with some 200 universities, research institutions and enterprises in over 70 countries and regions, such as University of Oxford in the UK and University of California in the United States. Currently, more than 1,000 students from some 100 countries and regions are pursuing degrees at the university.

In addition to degree candidates, the contest is open to all people from overseas who have graduated from universities in China and who now work in China. Essays can be in Chinese or English. The winners will receive certificates and monetary awards.

The essays, which should be no longer than 3,000 words, should cover personal experiences of and/or reflections on China's development. The deadline for entry is September 15.

The contest is co-sponsored by the UESTC Center for West African Studies, a research organization established with universities in West African nations, the Center for African Studies at Peking University and the UESTC School of International Education.

The contest is supported by the Chinese Society of African Historical Studies, a community of scholars and researchers whose objectives are to promote the study of African history in China, as well as the China International Communications Group Center for the Americas, a multifaceted international communications institution with a variety of media platforms, including China’s only national English newsweekly, Beijing Review.
