The 2023 "UESTC Outstanding International Students" Defense Meeting

On December 12th, the 2023 UESTC Outstanding International Students Defense Meeting took place on the Qingshuihe campus. Following on-site evaluations by judges, Rueda Duque Gloria Rebeca, a master student from the School of Public Administration, and Osei Seth, a doctoral student from the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, stood out among the 13 candidates and were awarded the title of "2023 UESTC Outstanding International Students".

The selection process of UESTC Outstanding International Students began in November, involving individual applications from international students, preliminary evaluation of various schools and examination of materials of School of International Education. A total of 6 master students and 7 doctoral students from 9 different schools entered the defense section. The defense meeting included three sessions: introductions by recommenders, personal presentations by candidates, and Q&A. The judges graded the students' academic work, scientific research and comprehensive quality from the aspects of basic studies, activity organization, on-site performance, Chinese language level and so on, and finally produced the list of"2023 UESTC Outstanding International Students".

Rueda Duque Gloria Rebeca from Ecuador, a master student from the School of Public Administration, came to China in 2015 and presented a paper at the 5th International Symposium on West African Studies at the Conference of Young Scholars and won the second prize in the essay competition “China in My Eyes – Development and Future”. In addition to her academic pursuits, Gloria has diverse interests, including horse riding, fencing, speed skating, and active participation in university artistic evening party. She also serves as an assistant in the international student office, and is always ready to help fellow international students with various issues. During the Q&A session, Gloria humorously shared her insights into the differences between the Chengdu and Beijing accents. She expressed her desire to become an ambassador in the future, promoting cultural exchanges between China and Ecuador, contributing to her motherland's innovative development.

Osei Seth, a doctoral student from Ghana in the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, has rich research achievements in intelligent manufacturing systems. He published four papers in top journals as the first author and contributed to a national standard led by UESTC. Osei is passionate about soccer, serving as the captain of the ISU Sports Committee soccer team for two consecutive years. He actively participates in various soccer leagues and has achieved notable successes. Osei also appreciates Chinese culture, visited the Jinsha Site Museum, and learns Chinese Kung Fu. He plans to continue deepening his research in the current field in the future.

The defenses of other candidates were equally impressive. Kedir Abdurezak Nuriye, whose chinese name is Du Ke, from the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering presented his experiences of overcoming cultural differences, academic research, and comprehensive personal development entirely in fluent Chinese. Khalil Ud Din, whose Chinese name is Ding Kai, a master student from the School of Electronic Science and Engineering, shared interesting stories about learning Chinese. Regasa Mubarak Hailu, whose Chinese name is Lu Jia,a master student from the School of Information and Communication Engineering, actively participated in volunteer services during the Chengdu Universiade, contributing youthful energy to this world-renowned international event.

Niyigena Ingabire Honorine , whose Chinese name is Ni Na, a doctoral student from the School of Life Science and Technology, speaks fluent Chinese and is dedicated to biomedical signal processing research, aspiring to contribute to improving human life through research. Saleem Muhammad Asad, a passionate doctoral student in Computer Science and Engineering from Pakistan, expressed his commitment to contribute to Sino-Pakistani friendship through his studies. Sulemana Bankuoru Egala , whose Chinese name is Song Ming, a doctoral student in the School of Economics and Management, participated in the defense online. Despite studying online, Song Ming actively engaged in various research activities, achieving fruitful research results.

Since 2012, the UESTC Outstanding International Students selection has been successfully held for eleven rounds, providing a stage for outstanding students from various countries to tell their stories with UESTC and China. The defense meeting offers a platform for international students to showcase themselves, igniting their enthusiasm and motivation for learning. It is hoped that international students will continue to actively participate in cultural exchanges, delve into their studies, and represent UESTC on the international stage, demonstrating the youthful charm of international students and contributing to the construction of a community with a shared future for humanity.
