1. Overview of the Essay Contest
A letter to African students studying in China:
Covid-19 has thrust the world into uncharted territory. In the arduous struggle against the Covid-19 in the past year, China has moved forward. As the world goes through a raging pandemic and profound changes rarely seen in a century, we need to firmly commit to the path of cooperation, mutual benefits for win-win. China has shown to the world what Chinese spirit is and what Chinese power is. Our friendship among countries worldwide has also been strengthened in the joint efforts against the Covid-19.
2021 is witnessing the 100th anniversary for the founding of the Chinese Communist Party. China has made huge achievements that have inspired the world. The Column of On West Africa (Huanqiu.com) hosted by the Center for West African Studies of UESTC is launching the essay contest with the theme of "China in my eyes——Reform and Development". This 2nd Essay Contest aims to promote the understanding of China’s development among African students and promote the development of friendly relations between China and Africa. Essay topics could relate to China's achievements in various fields. African students are encouraged to share your personal experiences on China's development. African students from all colleges and universities across China are welcome to join with us. We are looking forward to your participation and it is our firm belief that we can deepen our understanding and friendship with each other more openly. Let us work together to promote friendly correspondences between China and African countries, have each others’ voices understood, and let China-Africa friendship gain more mutual understanding and supports.

2. Rules of Essay Contest
(1)General requirements:
The essay should not have been published publicly, no plagiarism, no violation of confidentiality regulations. The essay should be closely related to the theme, and the arguments on the topic should be clearly demonstrated.
(2)The requirements for essay submissions:
Theme:“China in my eyes——Reform and Development”
Wording: Up to 3000 words
Language: Chinese/English
The submission includes (in order): Title; Author Name; Author Unit, Address, Zip Code, Contact Information and Essay Body.
(3) Eligibility of candidates:
African students from colleges and universities across China (including African students who graduated in China and Africans working in China)
(4) Essay contest schedule:
Submission deadline: June 10, 2021
Notification Date: On or after June 23, 2021
3. Awards
First prize (1 winner): certificate with awards of 2000 RMB
Second prizes (2 winners): certificates with awards of 1500 RMB for each winner
Third prizes (3 winners): certificates with awards of 800 RMB for each winner
Outstanding awards(5 winners): certificates with souvenirs
All the submitted provided by the approval from Huangqiu.com on the column for West Africa studies will be published in Chinese with the aided translation from organizing committee and subject to the author’s approval. This selected essay after peer review’s approval are to be published with West African Book Series, yet the selected essays’ publications has no involvement in the selection for awarded essays.

Introduction to University of Electronic Science and Technology of China
Renowned as China's cradle for the national electronic industry, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (formerly Chengdu Institute of Radio Engineering) is situated at Chengdu, the city of over a thousand-year-old cultural history in "the land of abundance".

Introduction to Center for West African Studies of UESTC
The Center for West African Studies of University of Electronic Science and Technology of China is established through the platform of Ministry of Education and resources of our collaborative universities, institutes and alumni in West Africa. The establishment of Center for West African Studies is in line with National Philosophy and Social Sciences “Going Global” Strategy with the need to improve the image of
UESTC in West African countries; to enhance China’s influence in West Africa; to strengthen China-Africa collaboration; and to serve as a bridge for researchers and practitioners from China, West Africa and beyond to identify and meet the needs of West Africa. Its goal is to become a Key Philosophyand Social Sciences Studies Base under the Ministry of Education of China and be recognized as a center for comprehensive and sustainable research Think Tank on West Africa and and Talents Training Center.
In 2021, the Center for West African Studies of UESTC was accredited by Ministry of Education of China.

Introduction to Center for African Studies of Peking University
The Peking University Centre for African Studies was founded in 1998 as an interdisciplinary institution for comprehensive African research. It consists of faculty members and research fellows from different departments and institutes at the university, who specialize in African politics, economy, culture, history, sociology, languages, and literature. The Center now has about 20 faculty members and 10 invited guest researchers and several dozens of student associates. The core mandate of the Center is to promote African studies at Peking University and improve its intellectual and research linkages with
Africanist scholars at other institutions.
Currently, the Center is collaborating with the Peking University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the Peking University School of International Studies to develop the first African studies curriculum program in China. The program will greatly enhance the education and research of Africa on Chinese university campuses. The Center also conducts research commissioned by and provides consultation for government organizations and private enterprises. The two flagship publications of the Center are the weekly newsletter, the PKU African Tele-Info, and the Annual Review of African Studies in China. While the weekly newsletter provides positive and timely information about Africa to the general public, the Review showcases research achievements of Chinese Africanist scholars.

Introduction to the Chinese Society of African Historical Studies
The Chinese Society of African Historical Studies is a community of scholars and researchers whose objectives are to promote the study of African history in China. It was founded in April 1980 at the School of International Studies of Peking University. Currently, Professor Li Anshan serves as president of the Society and Dr. Bi Jiankang the secretary-general. The Society follows the principle of “letting a hundred flowers blossom and a hundred schools of thought contend,” endeavors to promote international academic exchanges between Chinese and international researchers and institutions, and is committed to strengthening Chinese scholars’ research capacity on African affairs. In doing so, the Society helps facilitate the development of China-Africa relations and contributes to China’s reform and opening-up and its socialist modernization.
Over the last thirty years, the Society organized and held dozens of nationwide academic conferences on African studies. It published important works including Essays in African Historical Studies (Sanlian Joint Publishing Co., 1982), General History of Africa (3 volumes, East China Normal University Press, 1995), and African Studies Series (East China Normal University Press). In addition,
the Society thus far has released 28 issues of its own academic journal, African Historical Studies. The Society not only encourages and sponsors Chinese researchers to conduct fieldwork in Africa, but also invites reputed international scholars to come and present their research in China. To sum, the Society has contributed greatly to the study of Africa and the promotion of African studies as a discipline in China.
Column On West Africa (Huanqiu. Com)
The Column on West Africa hosted by CWAS of UESTC has been officially launched on the Huanqiu.com in December,2019. Huanqiu.com is a national rating on line media platform, approved by the publisher of People's Daily and the Central Internet Information Office of China. This column is to provide a platform for researchers and practitioners on West African issues.
